The story behind the pottery patterns:
Throughout my 30+ years of making, I have been captivated by the process of creating patterns (templates) for soft-slab forms. What began as a way to develop repeatable spout and handle designs has evolved into complete patterns—a series of templates—for entire forms!
My journey with patterns started in the early 1990s when, as a young sewing enthusiast, I worked at JoAnn Fabrics as a fabric specialist. During those years, I made and altered most of my clothes, pieced together quilts from my collection of fabric remnants, and designed bags and purses. Then, in 1995, I discovered clay while pursuing my undergraduate degree, and my sewing machine began collecting dust.
Fast forward to the pandemic, when the sewing machine re-emerged, and my potter’s wheel took a back seat. Since then, I haven’t looked back. For the last five years, my studio practice has been dedicated to slab-built ceramics, where my love for patterns has flourished.
This new collection of pottery patterns is the culmination of years of research and refinement. I have distilled my ideas into repeatable templates, thoughtfully designed and meticulously packaged for makers of all levels—from beginners to advanced. While prior clay (handbuilding) experience is helpful, it’s not essential to use these patterns.
